Definitions Rules Usage End Loot
One of the most contentious aspects of WoW is the group looting. Some of the kindest and most well meaning people play the game, but also some of the most immature and greedy little children do as well. Their eyes go wide at everything, and they want it all, even if they can't wear it; or if they can wear it, they want it even though it was made for a different class and has statistics that are absolutely useless to the class of their character. It takes a long time to learn the game well enough to know when armor or weapons are usable but unsuitable for a class, and to see to it that the class that has full advantage get first shot at rolling. This analysis by the group leader is essential and cannot be accounted for unless specific rules are followed. Also, many stay until they have what they need and then abandon the group. To offer an incentive, the concept of "End Loot" was established.
Definitions:
"[Party]Leader: Standard Loot rules folks - one blue, one set"
Loot
The items that drop off of the mobs we kill.
It is often the main reason people form groups ... to get the loot!
Blue
This is loot that is superior or
better. Blues are normally blue (superior), but can be purple (epic) items.
Whether the item is blue or purple, they are treated the same. The epics
that drop in high end instances, with huge parties of 20 to 40 players, do differentiate between epic
and superior items. If there happens to be 40 people in a PuG ... rare, but I
suppose it could happen ... the saying would be "one epic, one set".
Set
This is loot that is part of a set. In the
endgame, there are sets of armor built for each class. These sets range in
specific tiers through superior and epic regimes. Sets award bonuses when a
player wears certain numbers of the items. Weapons are also often designed as
part of a set, with specific main and off hand weapons that give bonuses to a
player with the entire set. Set items are not considered as Blue items,
regardless the color or quality of the item. Set items are a special
category of loot.
EL = End Loot
This is loot that is picked up and
held by the raid leader or their designee. It is rolled for at the end of
the raid (see the "End Loot"
section below for details).
BoP =
Binds on Pickup
These are items that drop and are soulbound to the
player once they are received. THEY MAY NOT BE GIVEN BACK IF THERE
IS A MISTAKE MADE. They are also some of the most sought after loot in the
game. These are the reason we have "loot rules". The
misappropriation of these items can be disastrous and heart breaking (not to
mention causing temper tantrums, animosity, and ill will).
BoE =
Binds on Equipping (Binds on Use is considered BoE)
These are items that drop and can be traded, sold,
or given away by the recipient of the item. There are epic items that are BoE.
Not all BoE is treated the same, but when there is a mistake made, it can be
remedied since the loot may be traded amongst members of the part.
DE
= Disenchant
Many items that are BoP cannot not be used by
players. Players would be forced to vendor the item that is
unusable. Items that are BoP can be disenchanted into shards, essences,
and dust. These materials are used to enchant weapons and armor; and are
more valuable to players than the vendor cash of the item.
Roll
Rolls are made by typing /roll 100 or /rnd 100 in
the chat window. What will be displayed is:
<Player's Name>
rolls 52 (1-100)
The roll can be made between one and any number, but 100 is the standard rolling
value used.
Ninja (see PuG)
PuG =
Pick-up Group
Many players are fortunate to belong to a guild,
where many friends are able to do groups and raids together. The majority
of players however are forced into PuG hell. This is why there are
standard rules. When individuals violate these rules, they cheat other
players out of the items they deserve. If mistakes occur on a BoE item,
then it can be resolved. If it occurs on a BoP item, it was not a mistake
(you had to accept through a warning screen), and it cannot be remedied.
When an individual mistakenly takes an item that is BoE and refuses to return it
they are considered a Ninja. When a player mistakenly acquires a BoP item,
they are considered a Ninja. Mistakes do happen, and if you mistakenly
acquire a BoP item, expect to get booted (whether the folks understand it was a
mistake or not ... expect to get booted.) Ninjas must be booted removed
from the group immediately. Once a person has a reputation as a Ninja,
others will not group with them or with other members from the Ninja's guild.
ML
= Master Looter
Often players will follow the loot rules until
there is a boss that drops a highly valued item. It is at this point where
they make a "mistake" and become a Ninja. It is a terrible
feeling to finally have a boss drop the item that has brought you to an
instance, over and over, only to have it stolen by someone that is willing to
thieve. There are people that lack integrity. To stop this practice,
the leader of the group will often change the looting preferences of the group
to "Master Looter". This prohibits Ninjas from thieving and
allows the leader to precisely control the distribution of loot. Master
Looter is the often requested by group members when not being used and is a
standard practice for bosses in instances.
Rules
Pass
On All
Blues and BoP items.
(pass on all 16 slot bags and all recipes)
It is common practice for the leader to use Master Looter on instance bosses to prohibit "accidental" occurrences of Ninja activities. Using Master Looter removes the need for most looting rules, and individuals roll for items as if everyone has passed, using the procedure below. However, make certain your Master Looter is familiar with the items or he might give an item like the Chromatic Carapace to a leather or cloth wearing class.
After everyone passes, the leader will allow members of those classes to which the item is designed, to roll on the item.
If it is a Blue BoP:
The leader will ensure that only rolls from
individuals that have not received a blue previously will be accepted. Set
items may only be rolled for by individuals that have not received a Set item
previously. A person is allowed one blue item (non-Set item) and one Set
item. Set items are not considered as blue items ... they are Set items. If
there are no players eligible to roll, then those players that were not allowed
to roll (because they already have received a Blue) will be given an opportunity to
roll. If no one qualifies to roll through need, then the item is DE'd and
the resulting material is held for EL.
If it is a Blue BoE:
It
will be kept by the leader or designee for EL. This includes set
pieces. During the EL distribution phase, the Blue BoE (often Set items)
will be rolled for
Other BoP:
Normally
these are "green" superior items. If no one qualifies to roll
through need, then the item is DE'd and the resulting material is held for EL.
All other items:
Other items are BoE and can be traded, given, or sold at the AH. These are "greed" items. All players should the "Greed" option for the item. If the item is an upgrade to a player's equipment, then that player may select the "Need" option in the looting box. If a player receives an item after selecting "Need", then that player must immediately equip the item. This is done to keep individuals from selecting "Need" on all items they can equip but do not really need. Such players are being greedy and plan to sell the item or give it to one of their alternate characters. By forcing the player to equip it, it becomes soulbound and cannot be sold or transferred to alternate characters.
Usage
The rules appear to be fairly complicated, but are easy to follow. If you see a blue or purple item, hit the little "x" in the top right corner of the loot dialog box. You have then passed. If the item is BoP and you accidentally hit the "Greed" or "Need" options ... never fear! A dialog box will appear telling you that to accept the item will bind it to you. Whenever you see this box, select the "Cancel" button, and then hit the little "x" in the top right corner of the loot dialog box.
You have now passed on all items that you are required to pass upon. Misunderstandings on all other loot can be resolved because the loot is not souldbound and may be passed between members. Recipes and 16 slot bags are considered EL. If a player accidentally acquires such an item; they are required to give the item to the leader or the designee which is holding the EL.
End Loot
The leader will distribute the EL in an orderly fashion.
First items to be rolled on will be the Set BoE items. THIS IS A NEED ROLL. All players that qualify for the item and have not received a Set item will roll for the appropriate item. If all qualifying players have received a Set item, then all qualifying players will roll. If there is no player qualified by class for the item, then the item returns to the EL cache.
Second items to be rolled on will be the Blue BoE items. THIS IS A NEED ROLL. All players that qualify for the item and have not received a Blue item will roll for the appropriate item. If all qualifying players have received a Blue item, then all qualifying players will roll. If there is no player qualified by class for the item, then the item returns to the EL cache.
Next:
The leader will
list the items in the EL cache by links in the chat window and call for the EL
roll. All members that have not received a Blue or a Set item will then
Roll. This roll will determine the order in which players may select an
item from the EL cache. As customary, the highest roll selects first and
on down the line. The leader is responsible for giving each person in turn
their opportunity to choose and receive the item. Once all eligible
players have received a choice from the EL cache, a second or a third roll may
be needed to distribute the remaining EL. These rolls will be accomplished
with all group or raid members taking part.
Once again the leader calls for a roll, and all members then roll for selection
order. This is continued until all of the EL has been distributed.
