Time-Lost Proto-Drake

&

Vyragosa

Draewind's First Kill - (32.7,66.1) - 14NOV09 02:03 server (PST)

As of 18OCT2013, I have killed and followed Vyragosa over 60 times.  Still no TLPD.

The Time-Lost Proto-Drake and Vyragosa are extremely Rare Dragonkin found in the zone of Storm Peaks on the continent of Northrend.  These two dragonkin are famous in the World of Warcraft because the Time-Lost Proto-Drake drops the rare Reins of the Time-Lost Proto-Drake, and Vyragosa is part of the achievements [Frostbitten] and [Northern Exposure]Vyragosa is a rare spawn, and it is estimated that the Time-Lost Proto-Drake spawns 1 in 16 Vyragosa spawns, randomly.  This makes the Time-Lost Proto-Drake a rare spawn of a rare spawn.  Many that have tracked the spawn rates, estimate that the Time-Lost Proto-Drake spawns on average about once a week.  It is however a random process and the Time-Lost Proto-Drake may spawn 4 times in one day, or not at all for a month.

There are many guesses as to the spawn points and timers, but the only thing known for sure about these dragonkin, is that they fly the same routes.  This is known because of the places they have been killed, and by helpful players that have followed them and recorded the paths.  The dragonkin links above will take you to a current map describing each dragonkin and showing the most recent kill positions from players kind enough to use the Wowhead Client and contribute to our knowledge about the World of Warcraft.

If you are a WoW player and want to hunt down these rare dragonkin, I suggest you obtain the addons:

_NPCScan and _NPCScan.Overlay

That being said, I have studied the material and the maps, and created what I consider to be the appropriate map with the most accurate flight paths.  These paths are taken from my own following of the dragonkin, and from videos.  I believe the dragonkin will normally stay on the same path, but there have been sightings that lead me to believe it is possible for the dragonkin to change from one path to another.  The only tracking that mentioned this, had the dragonkin on the "Red Path" completing a full circuit and as it crossed the "Engine of the Makers", it made a right turn and joined the "yellow path".  The report was given by someone unfamiliar with the dragonkin and the path may very well have been the "yellow path" all along.  In my following the dragonkin, they have always remained on their original path.  The videos always end at the completion of one cycle from when the dragonkin was spotted.  The videographers normally end by killing the dragonkin.

*All of the routes are counter-clockwise except the Green Route that is clockwise.
See the videos below for views of the routes.

My View:

Spawns and Routes:

I believe there is a spawn point for each of the routes.  On the map I created, the spawn points are indicated with arrows pointing in the direction of travel.  The path is then created by moving between dots.  I have used the same color conventions as the better previous maps.  I have seen records with a consistent spawn time of 3 hours lowest and 12 hours as the longest.  Some seem to fluctuate back and forth between about 3 hours and 9 hours.  I have noticed also that the majority of spawns occur "on the hour", or within 5 minutes on either side.  I pick a camp spot, and I wait with NPC Scan.  On the hour, if no spawn occurred at my spot, I begin traversing the paths backward.  You may notice that all of the paths, except the "green path", run counter-clockwise.  I always check the "yellow path" first, as it seems to be the one preferred by the Time-Lost Proto-Drake.  As I get to the intersection of "yellow path" and "orange path", I make a sharp left to traverse the "orange path" in reverse, breaking off to the "green path" northward in reverse as well.  As I get to the Snowdrift Plains or Valkyrion, I reverse course and follow the "red path" in reverse.  I do this sweep only to locate the corpse of the dragonkin if it is still present, allowing me to keep track of the times and locations.  I doubt there will be a re-spawn within less than 3 hours.  Of course you would run the color of your camp spawn last.

Camping Spawns:

Any of the spots I consider spawn points would be a great area to camp.  A camping spot must be as close to as many spawns as possible and cover as many routes as possible.  The Time-Lost Proto-Drake seems to prefer the southern most routes, but that could simply be a result of normal traffic.  There was so much traffic north by Ulduar, the Time-Lost Proto-Drake would more than likely been killed there a great number of times.  It was not.  I can only speculate that it does not take the "red path" as often as the others.

Camping the "yellow spawn" (50.0, 69.0) will leave you "out in the cold" whenever the other paths spawn.  You will only see the dragonkin if they spawn on the yellow path.  But you shouldn't have to fight anyone to get the dragonkin tagged.

Camping the "orange spawn" (37.5, 73.5) will give immediate access to the "orange path" and will allow the pick-up of the "yellow path" if the dragonkin can make it through the Foot Steppes without getting taken by others.

Camping a bit southeast of the "red spawn" (42.0, 58.5) is the most popular with folks.  They know there is something about that big hole in the ground.  It is a very successful camp spot because it picks up the newly spawned dragonkin from the "red path", and allows access to the "yellow path" near its beginning, and the "green path" near its end.  If there are many folks out hunting the dragonkin, it will never make it to you on the "green path".

Camping the "green spawn" (30.8, 66.1) will give immediate access to the "green path" and will allow the pick-up of the "orange path" about half way through its run.  The "orange path" is likely not to get picked up if there is not someone camping the "orange spawn".  The dragonkin will make it around to the "green spawn" area most of the time.  The "red path" dragonkin are picked up regularly passing Ulduar, and occasionally as they approach Valkyrion.  There are normally hunters seeking the tamable rare "Skoll", hanging out north of Valkyrion.  If the dragonkin makes it to Valkyrion, it will be yours at the "green spawn".

Videos:

The map above shows the four paths used by the dragonkin.  They are the Yellow, Green, Red and Orange paths.  Below are YouTube Videos of the dragonkin as they travel these paths and verify the routes.
